Benford’s Law: a fascinating paradox

Did you know that approximately 30% of numbers in nature begin with the number 1? This phenomenon, known as Benford’s Law, seems incredible at first glance, but it has surprising applications in fields such as statistics, auditing and fraud detection. In our commitment to educational excellence, we have integrated this concept into our academic activities to challenge and inspire our students.

From this idea, our teacher Alberto Candón proposed a challenging project that motivated our students to explore this concept and its implications beyond the apparent.

An outstanding project: analysing Benford’s Law

One of the recent achievements that reinforces our commitment as an educational centre for high abilities was the project led by Álvaro P., a brilliant student who decided to delve deeper into Benford’s Law. His project included:

1. Extensive research: Álvaro studied the theoretical underpinning of the law, exploring how and why it works in different scenarios.
2. Real data collection: To validate Benford’s Law, he used population data from municipalities in Spain, ensuring that the sources were reliable and relevant.
3. Advanced statistical analysis: Using digital tools such as spreadsheets and specific software, he was able to identify numerical patterns and compare them with the predictions of the law.
4. Creative and professional presentation: She designed a presentation in Canva, capturing the attention of her peers and teachers while clearly explaining her findings.

The impact of this project was not only academic, but also motivational, inspiring other Highly Capable students to continue exploring complex and relevant topics.
