An Unforgettable Experience: Cultural Exchange in Virginia
Last August, a group of 10th grade and 11th grade students from Fontenebro International School had one of those life-changing experiences that will stay with them forever. Together with classmates from Aravaca International School, they took part in a cultural exchange with Norfolk Academy in Virginia, USA, from August 29th to September 10th.
This exchange program had actually started months earlier, back in May, when we welcomed the American students into our homes in Moralzarzal. During that first stage, our visitors had the chance to live with us, discover our culture and language, and experience daily life in Spain. But the real challenge came at the end of the summer, when it was our turn to cross the Atlantic and immerse ourselves in American life, staying in the homes of the very same friends who had been with us just a few months before.
Washington D.C.: First Cultural Encounters
The trip began with a stay in Washington D.C., the capital city and an iconic symbol of American history and politics. There, our students visited some of the most famous landmarks, such as the impressive Lincoln Memorial, where they took a group photo that will remain a beautiful memory. Surrounded by visitors from all over the world, they were able to reflect on the importance of historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and gain a deeper understanding of the democratic values he represents.
Besides visiting memorials, the students also strolled through museums and open spaces in the city, soaking in the multicultural and vibrant atmosphere of Washington. It was the perfect starting point to get oriented in the country and begin opening their minds to new perspectives.
Arrival in Norfolk: A Home Away from Home
After those first few days in the capital, the group traveled to Norfolk, where their host families were waiting for them. This was where the true essence of the exchange began: daily life with their American classmates. The experience of sharing routines, meals, and traditions in another family’s home was undoubtedly one of the most enriching parts of the trip.
Not only did the students practice English in a natural and constant way, but they also integrated themselves into the school life of Norfolk Academy, a prestigious school with a strong academic and cultural spirit. Attending classes in such a different environment was a unique opportunity to compare educational methods and to see how, despite the differences, values like effort, curiosity, and friendship are universal.
Cultural Visits and Activities
During their stay, the students had the chance to take part in several cultural and educational visits that further enriched their learning. Among the highlights was the visit to the USS Wisconsin, one of the most impressive battleships of the U.S. Navy. Walking across its decks and learning about its history allowed them to step back into an important chapter of 20th-century military history.
Pride and Gratitude
Yet, beyond the monuments and activities, what stood out the most from this exchange were the personal connections. Our students built strong bonds of friendship with their American peers—connections that will surely last for years to come. Sharing such intense experiences, both in Spain and in the United States, helped them understand the value of respect, empathy, and openness toward other cultures.
This journey also gave them a significant boost in independence and personal growth. Traveling without their families, adapting to new environments, and communicating in another language are lessons that cannot be found in textbooks but are essential for their academic and personal futures.
Orgullo y gratitud
At Fontenebro International School, we feel extremely proud of our students, who represented our school with enthusiasm, responsibility, and joy. We would also like to thank the host families from Norfolk Academy, who generously opened their homes and hearts to our students, as well as the teachers who made this project possible—especially Nieves, who accompanied the group throughout the journey.
The exchange with Norfolk Academy was not just a trip; it was a transformative life experience. Our students returned to Moralzarzal with their suitcases full of memories, new knowledge, and friendships that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
Because in the end, beyond the miles traveled or the monuments visited, what makes an experience like this unforgettable is the realization that the world is much bigger than it seems, and that there are countless ways to live it, learn it, and share it.
